Jim Ulrich is most interested in that area between the landscape’s reality and that imagined by the conceiver, but as he says ‘in any case I make abstract paintings’. He also makes films, particularly of the Nong Kai area of northern Thailand, capturing images of the methane fireballs of the Naga Lights, which have been an abiding mystery to him for years.

As a painter his images do not reference recognisable forms, the results are de-constructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and becomes multi-faceted. He experiments with aleatoric processes but ensures processes are evident throughout the works.
