Pea Eaters and Venetians: A Survey Part 1 Pea Eaters
9th July
8th August 2016

Sculptural elements are prominent in these works. Garry developed the first ‘pea eater’ during the time he spent in Perth in the 1990s, the best known of which is now held in The Murdoch University Collection. Garry returned to the theme recently to create Pea Eater with Nude (2012-16). This painting exemplifies the artist’s portrait practice, which has sustained his ability to continue as a professional artist over the last 30 years. Garry believes the strength and resonance of good art is largely attributable to working directly from life. Elements of the Pea Eaters can be found in The Venetians series, but executed in a deliberately less formal manner.
