Robert Clinch is one of Melbourne’s most accomplished contemporary artists. Clinch has been exhibiting his work across Australia’s finest galleries in both an institutional and commercial setting since the 1980s. Clinch has previously worked in gouache, dry brush, watercolour, lithography, and the ancient technique of egg tempera.

The artist’s meticulous attention to detail in landscape and portraiture has seen him excel in both fields. Although perhaps best known for the realism of his capriccio landscapes, Clinch has a strong affinity for portraiture, and his depiction of fellow artist Sir William Dargie was named a finalist in the prestigious Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1998. In the Gallery’s landscape category, Clinch has been a finalist in the Wynne Prize an astonishing 11 times, taking home the Trustees’ Watercolour Prize in 1989 and 1993. Clinch’s work is held in the permanent collections of major institutions such as The National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; The Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; and The National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
