David Boyd (Australian, 1924 – 2011)

Trials and Tribulations: Faith, Justice and the London Underground

Closing Night Event – Friday 27 March 5-7pm

David Boyd (Australia, 1924-2011) is one of Australia’s most recognisable artists, having established a lifelong career exhibiting across Australia and internationally. The artist was a member of Australia’s highly distinguished artistic family, the Boyd dynasty. He was also one of the original signatories of the ‘Antipodean Manifesto’ in 1959, alongside his brother, Arthur Boyd, art historian Bernard Smith and artists John Brack, Robert Dickerson, Charles Blackman, Clifton Pugh and John Perceval, which launched a defence against abstract expressionism gaining a foothold in this country. Boyd’s work is represented by all major collecting institutions in Australia, public and private.

This collection of rare original paintings, sculptures and etchings marks the first solo exhibition, with an accompanying monograph, of the artist to be held since ‘David Boyd: His Work, His Life, His Family,’ held at the S. H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney in 2012. Many of the artworks on display have not been on public view since they were originally exhibited more than fifty years ago.

‘Trials and Tribulations’ is a fitting title for this show as it encapsulates the periods and series of work throughout David Boyd’s career, highlighting his exploration of the human condition and challenging the injustices of the world. Boyd’s life as a multidisciplinary artist comes to life with artworks featured from seminal series ‘The Tasmanians’; ‘The Trial’; ‘Church and State’; ‘London Sfumatos’; ‘The Garden in the Wilderness’; and ‘The Private View.
