Joanna Gambotto

More is More

2 May – 30 May 2024

Open Studio | Thursday 2 May 6pm – 8pm

Fox Galleries is delighted to present a selection of works by Joanna Gambotto completed during her residence with the Gallery at 67 Wellington St.

From 2 May – 30 May, the latest additions to Gambotto’s oeuvre will be on display in the Stockroom Gallery. Gambotto’s temporary artist studio has been once again returned to an exhibition space.

Following in the footsteps of Danila Vassilieff, Gambotto has drawn inspiration from Melbourne’s heritage streetscapes of Collingwood and Fitzroy.

Juxtaposing past and present, Gambotto’s body of work consists of smaller street scenes completed en-plein-air alongside larger, detailed studies of Melbourne’s most eclectic interiors.

Gambotto has been prolific over the last number of weeks and has enlivened the makeshift studio

Running simultaneously at number 63, the Gallery space will feature a Retrospective of Gambotto’s works which will enable viewers to explore the artist’s evolution over the last number of years.

Joanna Gambotto is best known for her vibrant still life and interior scenes. Through her expressive brushstrokes and rich use of colour, Gambotto paints aspects of everyday life that balance between reality and fantasy. Joanna transcends the boundaries of composition which creates a setting that feels familiar but also obscure.

Born in Poland, Joanna relocated to Australia and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School in 2013. Since graduating, Joanna has been working as a full-time artist in Sydney. Gambotto is proficient in a variety of mediums including drawing, print-making, and painting. Gambotto has held numerous solo exhibitions, several artist residencies, and her talents have been recognised with prizes including ‘The People’s Choice Award’, at the ‘Dobell Drawing Prize 2021′.
